MAKGEOLLI
Coolmak: when hop bitterness enters makgeolli
Sweet tropical-fruit aroma, bitter hop and herb notes, and a sweet-tart, bitter taste. Coolmak asks what an IPA idea can do inside takju, an unfiltered Korean rice drink.
A 2024 guide describes tropical-fruit aroma with hop, herb, and mint notes but does not quantify aroma, body, carbonation, or finish. It covered a 330ml product and does not guarantee the current 500ml blend.
Mac and cheese, grilled cheese, and cream pasta are suggested: fatty foods without heavy seasoning let hop bitterness pass through rounded cream and cheese.

Hop bitterness spreads through cloudy takju. Seoul Hyomobang calls Coolmak an IPM resembling Hazy IPA; a 2024 Sooldamhwa guide describes tropical-fruit sweetness, hop and herb bitterness, and a sweet-tart, bitter taste, with mac and cheese and cream pasta suggested.
Masillog travel note
A reconstructed travel note, not an on-site report: in Seoul, order with the question, “Why is there a hop in my makgeolli?” and start the conversation with the first aroma.
Behind the bottle
The producer says hops and herbs were dissolved into takju, inspired by hop alpha acids and Hazy IPA, and calls the result IPM. It is a new category built from traditional ingredients, not a restoration claim.
Before the trip
Sooldamhwa lists 8.5% ABV and 500ml, refrigerated below 10°C. Recheck sales and delivery guidance before buying.
