Step off the train in Gangneung and the sea is still out of sight. Instead of saving five beaches on your map, choose a first stop. If your idea of a coastal break involves coffee with a view, make it Anmok.

The beach is a separate journey

Treat Gangneung Station and Anmok as separate stops, rather than one walkable neighbourhood. Save 안목해변 in your map app and check a bus or taxi route for your arrival time. Travelling with a suitcase? Find out whether your accommodation can hold it before you head to the coast.

Look at the sea before choosing a seat

Anmok is known for its seaside coffee street. Save one café you like the look of, but take a short beach walk when you arrive. You can decide afterwards whether that window seat is worth waiting for.

For a longer walk, look up Solbaram Bridge, which links Anmok and Namhangjin. Let the weather and your energy decide how far you go.

Let lunch choose the next stop

If tofu sounds good, consider Chodang for your next meal. Allow for another journey from Anmok. On a day trip, work backwards from your train home and leave time to get back to the station without rushing.
